Overcoming Procrastination and Finding Your Creative Flow with ADHD

April 25, 2023

Procrastination is a master thief of time, a killer of creativity if left unchecked, and a trap that ensnares many. But it doesn't have to be that way.

To overcome procrastination and find your creative flow, you must first recognize that procrastination is not just about laziness or lack of motivation. It's a complex issue that can stem from fear, self-doubt, perfectionism, or even boredom.

The key to overcoming procrastination is to understand your triggers and develop strategies to manage them. Start by breaking down your projects into smaller, manageable tasks and setting achievable deadlines.

If you're anything like me, after you break it down, you will get an overwhelming sense of dread and fear that there is no way you will be able to stay focused and motivated enough to get this project done. For those of us with ADHD, we have to set the deadlines much closer. We will wait to the last minute, and use up as much of the time we are allotted.

But sometimes even the best-laid plans can go off the rails. When this happens, don't beat yourself up or give up on your goals. Instead, embrace imperfection and keep moving forward. Remember that creativity is messy and unpredictable. A complete shirt show before it comes out on the other end.

Finding your creative flow is not just about overcoming procrastination; it's also about cultivating an space and influences that nurtures your creativity. Surround yourself with people who inspire you, expose yourself to new experiences and ideas, and take breaks to recharge your batteries.

In the end, overcoming procrastination and finding your creative flow requires discipline(deadlines with consequences), courage(fear of letting others down), and persistence(directed hyper focus that will probably lead to burnout). It won't happen overnight (even tho it could if you take a few red bulls and it's due in the morning) or without effort. With focus and a positive attitude, there are no limits to what you can achieve. To bad our attention is already in a deficit and we coastally feel like we are good enough.

So go ahead – take that first step towards realizing your dreams. The world needs more creators like you!
